Virginia Legal Aid Counsel Application Instructions

OVERVIEW

Carefully read the Supreme Court of Virginia Rule 1A:9 before starting your Application.

Required Evidence - to be eligible for Virginia Legal Aid Counsel, you must submit satisfactory evidence to meet all requirements of 1A:9(b).

Thoroughly read and follow these instructions, as failure to do so will delay the processing of your Application and could reflect negatively on your character and fitness to practice law.

The Virginia Legal Aid Counsel Application is under construction and will be available by January 31, 2026.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Certain items are required to be submitted with your Application. Before you begin completing the Application, request the documents you are required to submit. Requesting the items in advance will ensure you can submit a complete Application.

The following documents are required with every Virginia Legal Aid Counsel Application. Click the links below for additional information regarding each requirement.

  • NCBE Number Confirmation
  • Driving Record(s)
  • Credit Report
  • Birth Certificate, Naturalization, or Immigration Documentation
  • Certificates of Good Standing - for all jurisdictions in which you are/have ever been licensed to practice law (electronically generated forms accepted). Must come from the Court of Last Resort (i.e., Supreme Court, Court of Appeals - not State Bar).
  • Certificates of Discipline - for all jurisdictions where you are/have ever been licensed to practice law (electronically generated forms accepted)
  • Law School Transcript
  • Resume of your past practice of law
  • Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct Affidavit (Included with Online Application)
  • Affidavit of Employer (Included with Online Application)
  • Fees (Money Order, Cashier's Check, or Certified Check. No personal or company checks.) One or multiple check(s) are acceptable. Checks must be made payable to "Virginia Board of Bar Examiners."
